En cuanto al embalaje exterior, deben elegirse materiales de calidad y rígidos para soportar posibles roces o golpes. Además, en el caso de elegir una caja de cartón, éste debe ser robusto, con buen gramaje, así como utilizar una caja nueva, sin que haya perdido su firmeza y sin deterioros que puedan facilitar su rotura. El tamaño de la caja debe ser acorde a la mercancía que se quiera enviar, ya que los huecos que queden vacíos serán más susceptibles de deteriorarse o doblarse pudiendo dañar la mercancía, en el caso de que el interior no llene la caja por completo, habrá que rellenar con papel de periódico arrugado, espuma, papel burbuja o similar.
En el caso de que la mercancía se vaya a paletizar, también habrá que asegurarse de que va correctamente embalada, evitando que sobresalga de las dimensiones del palet por los laterales y asegurándola correctamente. Para ello, se debe fijar todo el conjunto con film desde la base del palet, incluyendo el palet de madera, hasta la parte superior, y con fleje de plástico duro o metálico. Así se conseguirá que la carga quede ajustada y reduciremos, en gran medida, el riesgo de deterioro durante la manipulación de la mercancía. Se trata de un servicio más cómodo para el transporte y, sobre todo, más seguro.
El embalaje interno también será importante, ya que actuará como amortiguador para la carga ante golpes o movimientos bruscos y evitará que la mercancía esté en contacto directo con el embalaje exterior. Lo más recomendable será encajar bien el contenido en el embalaje, un objeto suelto tiene muchas más probabilidades de dañarse que un objeto correctamente encajado. Para ello se podrán utilizar diferentes materiales que protegerán la mercancía como:
- Hojas de espuma o virutas de polietileno.
- Plástico de burbuja.
- Espuma moldeable.
- Papel Kraft.
- Embalaje inflable.
- Protectores de esquinas en el caso de muebles y otros objetos.
- Cartón corrugado.
